One of the best things about summer in Manitoba is that you don't have to go very far to feel like you've escaped.
Whether you're looking for somewhere to spend an afternoon with the kids, meet friends on a patio, get outside on the trails, or simply make the most of our short (but beautiful!) summer season, Winnipeg and the surrounding area have no shortage of places worth exploring.
Here are a few local favourites that seem to make everyone's summer bucket list.
For the Nature Lovers
If your perfect summer day involves fresh air and a good walk, Winnipeg has plenty of options.
Assiniboine Park is one of those places you can visit over and over without getting tired of it. Between the gardens, walking paths, playground, zoo, and Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, it's easy to spend an entire afternoon here.
For something a little more active, FortWhyte Alive offers hiking, biking, canoeing, wildlife viewing, and beautiful trails that feel surprisingly far from the city.
Or pack a picnic and explore places like Kings Park, Whittier Park, or Crescent Drive Park for a slower-paced afternoon.
Family-Friendly Adventures
Summer with kids usually calls for a little variety.
A trip to The Forks is almost a Winnipeg tradition. Grab lunch, let the kids explore the green spaces, walk the riverfront, browse local shops, or simply enjoy one of the many seasonal events happening throughout the summer.
For bigger adventures, families love Tinkertown Family Fun Park, while rainy days are made much easier with places like APEX Adventure Plex Winnipeg or the Manitoba Museum.
If You Love Being Active
Not every summer outing needs to involve a destination.
Some of Winnipeg's best days are spent cycling along the city's trail network, paddling on the Red or Assiniboine Rivers, trying pickleball for the first time, or spending an evening playing disc golf with friends.
If you're looking to escape the city without travelling too far, Birds Hill Provincial Park is hard to beat. Less than 30 minutes from Winnipeg, it's a summer favourite for hiking, cycling, swimming, picnics, and spending the day at the beach.
And if you have a little more time, Winnipeg Beach makes for a great day trip. Walk the boardwalk, cool off with a swim, grab an ice cream, and enjoy the small-town lake atmosphere before heading home.

Patio Season & Nightlife
Ask almost any Winnipegger what they're doing on a warm summer evening, and there's a good chance the answer involves a patio.
The Exchange District is perfect for patio hopping, live music, and exploring some of the city's best local restaurants.
If you're looking for a lively atmosphere, Corydon Avenue has long been one of Winnipeg's favourite summer destinations, filled with restaurants, cafés, dessert spots, and late-night patios that stay busy well into the evening.
Festivals That Make Summer Feel Like Summer
One of my favourite things about Winnipeg is that there always seems to be something happening.
Depending on when you're exploring, you might catch:
Winnipeg Folk Festival
Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival
Folklorama
Outdoor concerts, movies in the park, and community events throughout the city.
They're the kind of events that make it easy to try something new every weekend without ever leaving the city.
Sometimes the Best Spot Is One You Haven't Found Yet
One of the things I love most about Winnipeg is that everyone has their own favourite summer spot.
Maybe it's the neighbourhood ice cream shop you've been visiting for years. The trail you walk every morning with your dog. The local farmers' market you never miss. Or the park where your kids insist on spending "just five more minutes."
Those are the places that make a city feel like home.
And one of the best parts of moving is discovering the spots that eventually become part of your own summer traditions.
If you're thinking about making a move in Winnipeg, I'd love to help you find not just the right home, but a neighbourhood that fits the lifestyle you're looking for. Because sometimes it's what's just outside your front door that makes all the difference.
